In 1999, the population of youth aged 8 -17 in New Hampshire
totaled 181,807 comprising 15% of the total state population.
"Children are becoming a smaller percentage of our state
population, however; the total number of children continues to
grow. This means a growing demand for existing support services
and a need for continued investment in local and state infrastructures
for children and families."
The diversity of New Hampshire is increasing: approximately 52
languages are spoken in Manchester public schools. "While
96% of our children are white, the non-white population is expected
to grow significantly over the next decade. Projections are that
the black and Hispanic child populations will each grow 21%, the
Asian and Pacific Islander child populations will grow by 30%,
and the Native American population will grow by 17% by the year
2005."
