To encourage print and broadcast reporting that digs deeply into
the factors that contribute to better outcomes for children, the
Foundation helped establish the Casey Journalism Center for Children
and Families the College of Journalism at the University of Maryland
in 1993. An independent, nonpartisan resource for journalists,
the center has three main activities: a week-long conference on
a specific children's issue; an awards program honoring distinguished
coverage of disadvantaged children and families; and a resource
center for journalists.
The Foundation is committed to building support for effective
strategies in system reform and community building by providing
data-driven evidence of successful innovations. We fund independent
evaluations of our own multiyear initiatives as well as other
programs that offer examples of assisting disadvantaged children
and families. Moreover, the Foundation supports the broad dissemination
of findings, knowledge, and lessons to a range of audiences interested
in better youth outcomes.
An essential step to meaningful reform is building the leadership
capacity of individuals who can help systems, institutions, and
communities undertake and sustain long-term change. These leadership
skills include the ability to plan strategically, to manage people
and institutions through change processes, and to communicate
persuasively with a variety of audiences. The centerpiece of the
Foundation's leadership development work is the Children and Family
Fellowship Program.
