The co-sponsors of this event suggest the following story angles:
- Trace several expulsions in different school districts (urban,
suburban, rural).
- Investigate DYS' ability to provide services to youth with
diagnosed learning
disabilities.
- Profile how one school and the juvenile justice system - from
DA's, police, courts, probation officers, juvenile justice roundtables
- are involved in disciplining students.
- Chronicle a week/month in the life of an expelled child in
a community which offers alternative education (Boston) and
one which doesn't (Everett).
- Focus on how the decrease in the number of students who will
receive special education affects rates of school exclusion
and court-involvement.
- Focus on how police view the ramifications of school exclusions
on public safety, including daytime crime rates.
- Profile Massachusetts schools' implementation of "zero
tolerance" policies.
- Profile the school experiences of immigrant children in Boston
Public School - the opportunities found and lost there - and
the services, like the Allston-Brighton Health Boston Coalition's
LINCS project, that effectively engage immigrant families in
their children's education.
