During the 1999-2000 school year, 35,139 Maine children with
disabilities, ages 3-21, were reported to the Department of Education.
This represents a rate of 155.48 per 1,000 students, an increase
of 3% from the previous year and a 25% increase since 1990. The
majority of the students enrolled were identified as having a
'learning disability' (38%), 'speech and language impairment'
(28%), or 'behavioral impairment' (12%).

has increased 25% in the last 10 years, from 125.5 per 1,000 students
in 1990-1991 to 155.5 in 1990-2000.
